Sounding Modernity
Sounding Modernity will be 53, short form sound art creations, to be published as season 4 of the conscient.ca podcast, once per week, from January 1 to December 31, 2023, in English and in French and will involve invitations for listeners to participate. These episodes will explore what modernity sounds like, how it affects us and how to ‘create the conditions for other possible worlds to emerge in the wake of what is dying’ as suggested in ‘Preparing for the end of the world as we know it’ by the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures collective.
e99 winter diary revisited
e99 winter diary revisited – homage to r. murray schafer (25′ introduction + 40′ composition in 12 parts + 3m credits) is a 68-minute episode that closes season 3 and features a soundscape composition of mine based on an unpublished essay that composer R. Murray Schafer wrote after a 10-day field recording trip that he and I undertook in rural Manitoba in February 1997 to produce a radio program on winter soundscapes for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR). In this episode, I ‘revisit’ this trip by illustrating Schafer’s text with new winter soundscapes recorded in Ontario and Quebec in 2022 as well as archival soundscapes. The final mix was realized and presented as part of a residency at the New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in South River, Ontario. 2. e99 (b) winter diary revisited – homage to r. murray schafer (composition only) is the 40-minute composition only (without the introduction or credits). SCALE-LeSAUT
SCALE-LeSAUT is a “network of networks” of artists and organizations working at the intersection of culture and climate in Canada (I was one of the founders in 2021 and now am chair of the board of directors). It’s mandate is to foster a coordinated, artful and impactful response to the climate emergency from Canada’s arts and culture sector. SCALE serve as a national hub to develop strategy, align activities, and build the leadership capacity of Canada’s arts and culture sector in the climate emergency. SCALE is driven by the conviction that inclusive, comprehensive, and far-reaching collaboration, both within and beyond our sector, will propel our creative work towards the decisive tipping points of cultural transformation.
